Zwolle is the capital of Overijssel province — an eastern Dutch industrial zone with a tradition of mechanical engineering, automotive supply chain and infrastructure products. For an integrator it's a less visible but stable market with concrete technology anchors.
Siemens Hengelo and industrial automation
Siemens Industry NL has in Hengelo (50 km from Zwolle) one of Siemens' largest industrial operations in Benelux. Hengelo is a traditional engineering location with substantial history (Stork Hengelo, the former engineering company; Akzo Nobel Hengelo salt mill; Twente University proximity). Siemens Hengelo supplies industrial automation — SIMATIC S7 PLC, SCADA WinCC, motion control SIMOTION, drives SINAMICS — for the entire Dutch market and exports to Belgium, Scandinavia and the UK.
For an integrator Siemens Hengelo means a multi-dimensional opportunity. First, the Siemens Partner Program — for us the relevant Siemens Solution Partner qualification, which we're gradually building via existing projects (`automotive-injection-line` Bratislava 2024 was under TIA Portal, which is precisely the core Siemens stack). Second, Siemens Hengelo has its own training centre and operational workshops needing IT and structured cabling expansions. Third, as Siemens regional HQ, Hengelo often needs sub-suppliers for local contracts in Overijssel and north-east Netherlands.
Wavin and pipelines
Wavin is a global leader in the production of plastic pipeline systems — water, sewer, gas, heating, optical cabling. HQ is in Zwolle with operations across the world. For an integrator Wavin is interesting via: - Extruded line automation (extruder + cooling chamber + pulling unit + cutter) - Machine vision for quality inspection (defect detection in pipe wall) - MES integration for production batch genealogy - Structured cabling in expansion halls
Wavin as a global firm also has global supplier programs, but for local expansions in Zwolle and east Netherlands it also has regional tenders. For an integrator with reference in automotive injection (`automotive-injection-line`), extrusion production is technologically related — it's about controlling the thermal forming process with polymer, with automation of inline quality inspection.
Apollo Vredestein and tyres
Apollo Vredestein has operations in Enschede (60 km from Zwolle) and produces tyres for passenger, light commercial and agricultural vehicles. Owner is Indian Apollo Tyres Limited, operations dedicated to the European market with export to North America. For an integrator tyre production is interesting via: - Robotic integration for tyre-building machines (KUKA, ABB for handling roughened plies) - Quality inspection of finished tyre (X-ray inspection, dynamic balancing) - ATEX zones for mixing equipment (rubber compounds contain volatile organic compounds) - MES integration with full genealogy of every tyre for IATF 16949 quality management
Apollo Vredestein has technically something similar to compressor production at Embraco Košice (which we covered in the Košice regional page) — high emphasis on final QC and genealogy. For an integrator this is a realistic entry profile.
Bolletje and food industry
Bolletje Almelo (40 km from Zwolle) is a traditional Dutch manufacturer of biscuits, rusks and crackers. For an integrator food is a niche via: - HACCP-compatible automation (tracking of temperatures, humidity, time-temperature integrators) - Structured cabling in hygienically clean zones (washable cabling, IP65 industrial connectors) - MES integration for allergen tracking and batch traceability
Power-Packer and hydraulics
Power-Packer Oldenzaal produces hydraulic cylinders for trucks (Mercedes Actros, MAN, Scania, DAF) — notably cabin tilt cylinders. For an integrator it's a classic Sondermaschinenbau operation: - Robotic assembly with ESD regulation (for sensor components) - Hydraulic pressure testing of every cylinder - Structured cabling and IT infrastructure in expansion halls
Our commuting relationship
Zwolle is from AMS Schiphol about 90 minutes by car or 75 minutes by direct Intercity. From Košice by air via AMS (about 2.5 h) plus 1.5 h transport. For projects in Zwolle, Hengelo, Enschede and Almelo realistic accommodation 1 to 4 weeks in Zwolle or Hengelo (Hengelo has better hotel capacities for longer stays).
For the trip from DACH zone (Düsseldorf, Münster, Osnabrück) Zwolle is more realistic by car — 3-4 h drive. For projects with German overlap (Stadtwerke Münster and Wavin Münster, or Apollo Vredestein expansion with German logistics), this is a realistic model.
Which pillars fit best
For Siemens Hengelo and the broader Siemens Partner orbit — **Automation + Data Centres**. PLC programming under TIA Portal, SCADA WinCC, motion control SIMOTION, structured cabling in the Siemens campus. Exactly the suitable profile for us.
For Wavin extrusion lines — **Industry + Automation**. Machine vision (YOLO, OpenCV), MES integration, automation of thermal forming process.
For Apollo Vredestein and tyre production — **Industry + Automation** with IATF 16949 focus. Robotic cell integration, quality inspection.
For Bolletje and food — **Automation + Smart Buildings**. HACCP-compatible automation, hygienically clean zones.
For Power-Packer hydraulics — **Industry + Electro**. Sondermaschinenbau according to our profile (KraussMaffei and Engel machines we integrated in Bratislava 2024).
What you shouldn't yet ask us about in Zwolle
Large metallurgical and chemical projects — Overijssel has few and primarily covered by Rotterdam or German metallurgical firms.
Military supplier chains (Thales Hengelo, formerly Hollandse Signaalapparaten) — closed orbit with NATO Secret clearance.
