Maastricht is the capital of Limburg province — the southernmost Dutch province, which geographically and culturally forms a bridge between the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. For an integrator Maastricht is strategically the most interesting entry point into the Dutch market for clients with operations in both DE and NL — especially in the "Aachen-Maastricht-Liège" triangle, where the distance between the cities is only about 30 km.
Geographical bridge from DACH
Maastricht is 30 km from Aachen (Nordrhein-Westfalen, DE) and 30 km from Liège (Wallonie, BE). That means it's the closest NL client to the DACH zone for us — for a Slovak supplier with German experience, Maastricht is a natural entry point. Commuting-wise Maastricht from Aachen is only 30 minutes by car, so for projects with accommodation in Aachen we can commute and cover also Maastricht and surroundings. For the trip from Prešov by car the realistic route is via Brno, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Aachen — totally about 12 hours of pure driving, with overnight realistically 14 hours.
By air Maastricht-Aachen Airport (MST) is a small regional airport hub with limited route offering. More realistic are flights via Brussels Zaventem (BRU, 90 min by car), Düsseldorf (DUS, 75 min) or Cologne-Bonn (CGN, 80 min). From Košice via DUS or BRU plus 1.5 h transport.
DSM Sittard and special materials
DSM (now DSM-Firmenich after the merger with Firmenich in 2023) has in Sittard (35 km north of Maastricht) the Brightlands Chemelot Campus — one of the largest chemical parks in Europe over an area of 800 hectares. Sabic Geleen (petrochemistry, polyolefins, ABS plastics), DSM Engineering Materials, DSM Resins, OCI Nitrogen (ammonia fertilisers), Niacet Corporation, Borealis and several smaller tier-2 players are based here.
For an integrator the Chemelot Campus is an extensive petrochemical zone with full ATEX geography — zones 0/1/2 for gas environments, zones 20/21/22 for dust environments, intrinsically safe equipment with EPL Gb/Db classification. For core ATEX zones the primary suppliers are Dutch tier-1 firms (Stork, Bilfinger Tebodin, ENGIE Fabricom). For peripheral projects: - Administrative IT in Chemelot administrative buildings - Maintenance outside active ATEX zones - Structured cabling in R&D laboratories - AI clusters for material science research (DSM has a large AI/ML stack for materials discovery)
Our `ai-cluster-research-lab` reference (Cluj-Napoca 2025) is technologically directly transferable to the DSM Materials AI cluster.
Mosa Maastricht and ceramics
Mosa is the best-known Dutch manufacturer of ceramic bricks, tiles and claddings — with a tradition since 1883. For an integrator ceramics production is interesting via: - Firing automation (continuous tunnel kilns with fully automated temperature profile control) - Machine vision for quality inspection (colorimetry, geometric precision, crack detection) - ATEX zones in mixing areas (fine dust) - MES integration for production batch genealogy - Structured cabling in expansion halls
Sappi Maastricht and special papers
Sappi Maastricht is the Dutch operation of South African Sappi Limited — producing special papers for packaging, labels, label stock, and coated papers for high-quality printing. For an integrator paper-making is interesting via: - Large-capacity paper machines (about 600 m long lines with coordinated servo control) - ATEX zones in dryers (organic solvents in the coating process) - Machine vision for defect detection in the paper web - SCADA integration of complex paper-making lines - HV substations (paper mills are energy-intensive)
Q-Park International HQ Maastricht
Q-Park International has its HQ in Maastricht and operates parking systems across Europe — UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland. For an integrator Q-Park is interesting via: - ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera systems - OCPP-compatible EV charging stations (Wallbox, KEBA, ABB Terra, EV Box) - Smart parking IoT sensors (Aqara, Shelly, Zigbee2MQTT, Matter) - Integration of parking systems into urban smart-city infrastructure - Central Q-Park IT system at Maastricht HQ
That's exactly the profile of our specialisation in Smart Buildings (`smart-mansion-loxone` 2025 — Wallbox + OCPP + KNX + DALI-2) and in IoT sensors.
Cross-border context — DE+NL combo contracts
For clients with operations in Aachen (DE) and Maastricht or Heerlen (NL), we can deliver uniformly via: - DACH contract via German contracts (German VOB B, A1 from SP SR, Slovak supplier as sub-contractor to the German prime) - NL contract via WagwEU notification to SVB (5 working days before start, A1 from SP SR, VAT reverse-charge via "BTW verlegd")
The client gets one technology partner for both sides of the border, while we have double project capacity from one accommodation in Aachen or Maastricht. That's exactly why we consider Limburg the strategically most natural NL entry.
Which pillars fit best
For DSM Chemelot Campus peripheral projects — **Data Centres + Software/AI**. AI clusters for material science, structured cabling in R&D laboratories.
For Mosa ceramics production — **Automation + Industry**. Machine vision, MES, automation of tunnel kilns.
For Sappi special papers — **Automation + Electro**. SCADA integration, HV substations, ATEX-aware work in dryers.
For Q-Park International — **Smart Buildings + Software/AI**. ANPR, OCPP EV charging, smart parking IoT.
For cross-border DE+NL clientele — **Electro + Industry** with flexible contractual model (VOB B + WagwEU).
What you shouldn't yet ask us about in Maastricht
Chemelot Campus core ATEX zones 0/1 — primarily for Dutch tier-1 EPC firms.
DSM materials core R&D — primarily internal DSM research with NDA regulations.
Conclusion — Limburg as entry point
From an MPIS expansion into the Netherlands perspective, Limburg is the most favourable first step. Cross-border DE+NL combo, proximity to DACH, natural continuity from German experience, and Q-Park HQ as a concrete strategic client for the Smart Buildings pillar. Target for 2026: first delivered contract in the Limburg-Aachen triangle.
