Assen is the capital of Drenthe province — the least populated province of the Netherlands (about 500 thousand inhabitants for the whole province) with a rural character and limited industrial profile. For an integrator that means a small market with several concrete niches, where the realistic scenario is project presence without standing commute cadence.
TT Assen and motorsport ecosystem
TT Circuit Assen is the most famous racing track in the Netherlands — since 1925 organising the Dutch TT Assen, part of the MotoGP World Championship. For an integrator it isn't primarily an industrial client, but the ecosystem around it has technical components: - AV installations for VIP boxes and paddock infrastructure - Structured cabling for commentary booth and TV broadcasting facilities - Smart-building control for the pit lane garage complex - Race timing infrastructure (this is primarily Tag Heuer / TimeService specialisation)
The motorsport ecosystem around Assen also includes engineering firms working on bike and kart development — primarily small engineering workshops with 5-20 employees. For an integrator it's a niche via Sondermaschinenbau for custom testing rigs (chassis dyno, engine test cells), but it's low volume and high specialisation.
Forbo Flooring and commercial floorings
Forbo Flooring Systems has its European operations in Coevorden (60 km from Assen) and produces linoleum, marmoleum, vinyl and textile floorings for commercial buildings (hospitals, schools, airports, offices). Clients: hospital chains, school districts, airport operators, office REITs.
For an integrator Forbo is interesting via: - Automation of production lines (mixing, calendering, embossing) - Machine vision for colour and pattern quality inspection (YOLO, OpenCV) - ATEX zones in mixing areas (organic volatile compounds in vinyl production) - Structured cabling in expansion halls
Numac Innovation and industrial automation
Numac Innovation Assen is a smaller Dutch firm focused on industrial automation — notably custom robotics integration for local clients in Drenthe and Groningen. For an integrator Numac is a potential partner in subcontractor mode — Numac as a local prime contractor occasionally needs external capacity for cabling, electrical install, or specific PLC programming.
Gasunie and gas cluster
Drenthe is a neighbouring province to Groningen, where Gasunie is headquartered and historically the largest natural gas reservoirs in the EU lie (Groningen gas, gradually closing due to sedimentary seismicity). For an integrator we open potential via the energy transformation — Gasunie as TSO for gas and hydrogen builds infrastructure for hydrogen electrolysers and biomass cogeneration. For these domains the Drenthe-Groningen cluster is strategic.

Our commuting relationship
Assen is from AMS Schiphol about 2 hours by car (by Intercity train via Zwolle direct connection about 110 minutes). From Košice by air via AMS (about 2.5 h) plus 2 h transport — totally about 5 hours. For projects in the Assen orbit realistic accommodation in Assen or Groningen (40 km north), where hotel capacities are better.
For us Assen isn't among primary project targets — it's project presence without standing cadence, where we realistically work only for a specific delivered contract, not via ongoing consultations.

Large metallurgical or chemical projects — Drenthe has them very limited.
Major development construction — Drenthe is a rural province with low density of construction projects.

Conclusion — Drenthe as project presence
Drenthe isn't a primary strategic market for an integrator from the V4 space. But as a satellite zone to the Groningen gas cluster and as local supplementary capacity to Forbo Flooring Coevorden, it's a realistic niche. For most contracts Assen is logistically a satellite for Groningen — when we have an active project in Groningen we can commute and cover Assen too.
