Szombathely is geographically the westernmost Hungarian regional capital — it lies 15 km from the Austrian border, two hours' commute from Vienna, almost the same time from Graz. That means Vas megye isn't an established "Hungarian" industrial market in the traditional sense, it's more an extension of the Austrian and southern German supplier chain via the Slovak-Hungarian corridor. For an integrator that means most local clients work primarily in German and have their own project culture closer to Graz or Linz than Budapest.
Opel Powertrain Szentgotthárd — the largest engine + gearbox plant
Opel Powertrain Szentgotthárd (45 km south of Szombathely, essentially on the Austro-Slovenian border) is the largest engine and gearbox plant of Opel Group (today Stellantis Group since 2021). It produces engines and gearboxes for Opel/Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Fiat models within the Stellantis multimegabrand portfolio. For an integrator it's a classic VW-like supplier audit regime — Stellantis Quality Standards, integration into the Stellantis IT environment, working language EPLAN plus German.
For us Szentgotthárd is typologically interesting via `industry` (Sondermaschinenbau for machining and assembly lines), `automation` (PLC for engine assembly lines, MES integration, OPC UA backbones), and `electro` (power and LV distribution for high-current engine test workstations). Our `automotive-injection-line` project corresponds typologically to the Stellantis supplier orbit.
For Szentgotthárd the commuting logistics is interesting — it's formally a Hungarian plant, but logistically and personnel-wise it's integrated into the Austria-Hungary cross-border corridor. Many employees commute from the Austrian side (Burgenland), meaning the supplier orbit is also partly Austrian.
BPW-Hungária Szombathely — trailers and axles
BPW-Hungária (part of German BPW Group, the largest European manufacturer of axles for trailers and semi-trailers) in Szombathely produces complete axles for cargo trailers and agricultural machinery. For an integrator it's a classic German Mittelstand approach — high machining precision, integrated welding lines, full traceability via VDA-like quality stack.
For us BPW is typologically interesting via `industry` (mechanical integration of machining and welding workstations), `automation` (PLC for welding cycle lines, MES), and `electro` (power for welders and machining workstations).
EPCOS Szombathely (TDK) — capacitors and coils
EPCOS Szombathely is part of TDK Corporation (Japanese electronic multinational, the largest global producer of electronic passive components). In Szombathely they produce ceramic capacitors, inductive components (coils) and EMC filters for automotive and industrial applications.
For an integrator it's an electronic environment with highly precise ceramic production — kiln sintering, precise cutting and assembly of capacitors, ESD protocols throughout production geography. Working language English plus German for the local management.
For us EPCOS is typologically interesting via `automation` (PLC for ceramic kiln processes, MES integration) and `electro` (power for high-current kiln systems, ESD-compatible LV distribution).
Bognár Cégcsoport — local industrial structures
Bognár Cégcsoport is a local Szombathely group providing industrial structures (steel halls, special-purpose machines) for smaller clients in the district. For us it's less priority — typologically similar segment to local Slovak suppliers, where we don't have a comparative advantage via geographical distance.
ELZETT Szombathely (forging and locks) complements the local industrial profile — historic Hungarian brand, but technologically less demanding segment than Stellantis Powertrain or BPW.
Our commuting relationship
From Prešov to Szombathely via D1 (Prešov–Bratislava) and M1/M86 (Bratislava–Győr–Szombathely) it's realistically 7 hours — commute comparable to Pécs or longer. For Szombathely a one-day trip isn't an option, we'd standardly work Monday-to-Friday mode with accommodation in the city.
Alternatively — and this is strategically interesting for Szombathely — via the Austrian corridor (Vienna, Graz). Via D2 (BA–Brno) plus A6/A2/A1 through Vienna to Szombathely is comparable commute, but with better road infrastructure and the option to combine with Austrian clients in one trip week. That's operationally more efficient for us.
Language
Opel Powertrain Szentgotthárd works in German as primary language — comfortable for us, similarly to Audi Hungaria Győr. BPW-Hungária in German as part of BPW Group. EPCOS Szombathely in English regime plus German for TDK European management. For formal documentation in Hungarian we use a partner HU translator.
Szombathely is thus one of the best-fitting HU cities for a German-oriented engineering team — dominant German thanks to Austrian geographical proximity and Stellantis/BPW ownership structure.
Where we're opening up in Szombathely
Opel Powertrain Szentgotthárd — for engine and gearbox assembly lines, Stellantis Tier-2 supplier orbit. Our `automotive-injection-line` project fits typologically.
BPW-Hungária Szombathely — for welding and machining lines for axle components.
EPCOS Szombathely (TDK) — for ceramic kiln automation, ESD-compatible LV distribution.
Conclusion
Szombathely is for us a third-tier priority market — geographically distant (7 hours from Prešov), but strategically interesting via the Austrian corridor and German-oriented clients. For the first wave of HU expansion not a priority; for the second wave (2026–2028) we can consider via combined Austro-Hungarian trip projects, where Szombathely naturally fits into the Stadler Wien / Magna Steyr Graz / Audi Hungaria Győr orbit.
