Szeged was historically a paprika and food region — Pick salami, Univer Product, Gallicoop turkey, MOL Petrochemicals near Tiszaújváros. In 2024–2025 Szeged suddenly appeared on the map of European e-mobility through one specific investment: BYD Auto Szeged, a new Chinese EV production hub, ramping from 2025. That's another category of areas in Hungary transforming just as Debrecen transformed via CATL.
BYD Auto Szeged — European EV production hub
BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the largest Chinese manufacturer of EVs and batteries, and is building in Szeged its first fully integrated European production plant — assembly of passenger EVs for the entire EU market. Ramping began in 2025, full capacity expected for 2027–2028. For an integrator it's a similar but less mature category to CATL Debrecen or BMW Plant Debrecen — the supplier orbit is forming right now, there's strong room for Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers who can work under a Chinese working regime (fast pace, English working language, less formal VDA-style audit, but strict deadlines).
For us BYD Szeged is typologically interesting via `industry` (press shops, assembly lines, robotic-cell integration — KUKA, ABB, FANUC), `electro` (HV/MV substations for EV production workstations, cabling), and `automation` (PLC, SCADA, MES). Our delivered `automotive-injection-line` project from the Bratislava Region fits typologically, only in the BYD environment work would run under a less formal audit regime than for the Audi or BMW supplier orbit.
MOL Petrochemicals Tiszaújváros — accessible to Szeged via M5
Tiszaújváros (200 km north-east of Szeged) is the main MOL Group petrochemical cluster — ethylene, polyolefins, polyethylene, polypropylene. For Szeged it isn't a direct local client, but MOL Petrochemicals operationally covers all of southern and central Hungary from Tiszaújváros. For `electro` in ATEX zones, intrinsically safe connections, and SIL-rated systems under IEC 61511 we're typologically prepared, but the commute from Prešov to Tiszaújváros (3 hours) is significantly shorter than via Szeged.
Pick Szeged and the food industry
Pick Szeged is the best-known Hungarian salami brand — continuous production of téli szalámi (winter salami) since 1869, own pig farm, smoking complex. For an integrator it's classic food industry — HACCP-compatible automation, yield QC lines, fume extraction for smoking workstations, IFS Food category 6 certifications for the entire production process.
Univer Product (food, milling) and Gallicoop (Hungary's largest turkey producer) together with Pick form the Szeged food cluster. For us it's a typologically less demanding segment than automotive or petrochemicals — `electro` (cabinet hygiene for food environments, IP65/IP69K protection), `automation` (HACCP-compatible SCADA, traceability via OPC UA), and `industry` (mechanical maintenance of food lines) we're typologically prepared.
Szeged University and R&D
Szeged University (Szegedi Tudományegyetem) is one of the oldest Hungarian universities and has a strong R&D base in biotech, chemistry and pharma. There's continuous demand here for laboratory infrastructure — cleanroom zones, vacuum chambers, HV/UHV systems for semiconductor experimental workstations. Our `vacuum-mechatronic-de` project for a Bavarian NDA client matches this segment typologically.
Our commuting relationship
From Prešov to Szeged via D1 (Prešov–Košice) and M3/M5 (Tornyosnémeti–Mezőkövesd–Szeged) it's realistically 6 hours — commute comparable to Győr. For a one-day trip Szeged isn't an option, we standardly work Monday-to-Friday mode with accommodation in the city. Alternatively via the Slovak-Serbian corridor (M5 onward to Subotica, RS), which is occasionally combined for southern Hungarian contracts.
Language
BYD Auto Szeged works in an English working regime — comfortable for us. Pick, Univer Product and Gallicoop primarily in Hungarian with English technical spec documents. For formal documentation in Hungarian (EBVF inspection reports, HACCP audit protocols) we use a partner HU translator.
Where we're opening up in Szeged
BYD Auto Szeged supplier orbit — for press shops, assembly lines, robotic integration, MES. The Tier-2/Tier-3 space is right now open, the Chinese regime allows faster entry than the VW or BMW supplier audit.
Pick Szeged + food cluster — for HACCP-compatible automation, traceability, hygienic cabinets. Less demanding segment, but stable.
Szeged University R&D infrastructure — for laboratory vacuum and HV/UHV mechatronics, cleanroom zones.
Conclusion
Szeged is for us second-third priority in Hungary — geographically distant (6 hours from Prešov), but opening up via the BYD investment just as Debrecen via CATL. For the BYD Tier-2 space the moment is forming now, where decisions on the supplier map are drawn month by month. For the first wave of HU expansion Szeged is less likely than Debrecen or Miskolc, but for the second wave (2026–2028) priority number two-three.
