Eger is the capital of Heves megye in north-east Hungary — historically a wine and baroque city at the foot of the Mátra, today a medium-importance industrial centre. For an integrator Eger has one advantage that distinguishes it from most HU regional capitals: it's geographically relatively close to Prešov (3 hours via D1 and M3), making it a naturally reachable HU market.
ZF Hungaria Eger — vehicle parts
ZF Hungaria Eger is one of several Hungarian ZF Friedrichshafen plants (alongside ZF Hungaria Salgótarján). It produces components for automotive gearboxes, e-drive sub-assemblies, ADAS systems. ZF Group is a German Tier-1 automotive supplier with its own authority — global leader in gearboxes, steering and e-mobility, supplier to VW, BMW, Mercedes, Stellantis, Toyota.
For an integrator it's a classic German Tier-1 approach — ZF Supplier Quality Standards, integration into the ZF IT environment, EPLAN as working language, primarily German with English meetings for international cooperation. For us ZF Hungaria Eger is typologically interesting via `industry` (Sondermaschinenbau, robotic-cell integration, mechanical assembly lines), `automation` (PLC for gearbox assembly lines, MES integration), and `electro` (power and LV distribution).
Our `automotive-injection-line` project from the Bratislava Region exactly matches the ZF supplier orbit — injection lines, robotic-cell integration, MES via Apriso. If a contract opened for ZF Hungaria Eger, we're exactly typologically prepared.
Mátra Erőmű — coal power plant in transformation
Mátra Erőmű (Mátrai Erőmű) in Visonta and Bükkábrány (50 km north-west of Eger) was historically Hungary's largest coal power plant — lignite from local mines, capacity around 950 MW. In 2024–2030 it's going through the same transformation phase as described for Szolnok: gradual closure of lignite blocks, transition to biomass, natural gas, plus pilot solar projects.
For an integrator Mátra is a transformation project typologically interesting via `electro` (HV/MV substations for new generation capacities, complete repower cabling work), `automation` (PLC and SCADA for new gas blocks), and secondarily `smart buildings` (BMS for administrative parts).
Visonta Heat & Power Plant (technically part of the Mátra complex) complements the local energy profile.
MERCK Életsztk Eger — pharma
MERCK Életsztk Eger is part of German Merck Group (one of the oldest pharmaceutical companies in the world). In Eger they produce pharmaceutical intermediates and special chemical products for the global Merck distribution chain. For an integrator it's a classic GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) pharmaceutical environment — cleanroom zones classified under ISO 14644 (typically ISO 7 or 8 for compounding), strict traceability via MES into the global Merck quality platform, EU GMP Annex 1 for sterile products (if relevant).
For us MERCK Eger is niche but typologically interesting — `automation` (PLC for GMP-compatible processes, MES with full pharmaceutical traceability), `electro` (cleanroom-compatible cabinets, ESD and fire control), and `industry` (mechanical integration of machining and sterilisation workstations).
Working language of Merck Group is primarily English with German headquarters support — comfortable for us.
Egerfood Kft — wine and food
Egerfood Kft (winery) is part of the traditional Eger wine region — Egri Bikavér ("Bull's Blood") is one of the best-known Hungarian wines. For an integrator it's classic food / wine industry with its own regulatory geography: HACCP-compatible automation, integrated leak detection for fermentation tanks, traceability via MES with full EU wine regulation.
For us Egerfood is typologically less priority — winemaking is a segment with very long renewal cycles and traditional suppliers, where local specialists have a natural advantage via generational relationships with winemakers.
Our commuting relationship
From Prešov to Eger via D1 (Prešov–Košice) and M3 (Tornyosnémeti–Eger) it's realistically 3 hours — Eger is geographically the third-closest Hungarian regional capital to Prešov after Miskolc and Salgótarján. For Eger a one-day trip is possible for site visits and short audits, standardly for continuous work we work Monday-to-Friday mode with accommodation in the city or surroundings.
For combination with Miskolc (1 hour north-east of Eger) or Debrecen (1.5 hours east) it's efficient trip projects, where Eger is a convenient base station for north-east HU work.
Language
ZF Hungaria Eger works primarily in German — comfortable for us, identical working language as Continental, Bosch, Audi or Mercedes. MERCK Életsztk Eger in English regime with German headquarters support. Mátra Erőmű primarily in Hungarian, plus English spec documents for international project cooperation (World Bank, EBRD financing of the transformation project). Egerfood Kft primarily in Hungarian. For formal documentation in Hungarian we use a partner HU translator.
Where we're opening up in Eger
ZF Hungaria Eger — for Sondermaschinenbau, robotic-cell integration, MES integration via Apriso. Our `automotive-injection-line` project fits typologically.
MERCK Életsztk Eger — for GMP-compatible automation and electrical projects, cleanroom-compatible cabinets.
Mátra Erőmű transformation project — for HV/MV substations during repower from coal to gas and biomass.
Conclusion
Eger is for us a moderate-priority Hungarian city — geographically reasonably accessible (3 hours from Prešov), with an attractive ZF Tier-1 reference and MERCK Pharma R&D space. For the first wave of HU expansion moderately likely — geographical proximity plus German-language working environment via ZF and MERCK makes Eger an attractive candidate right after the trio Debrecen–Miskolc–Nyíregyháza.
