Oviedo is for us in Principado de Asturias the main strategic node — headquarters of ArcelorMittal Asturias Gijón + Avilés (Spain's largest steel complex), Asturiana de Zinc San Juan de Nieva (the largest zinc smelter in the EU), Du Pont Asturias (special chemicals) and El Musel Port (industrial port). From Prešov it's a 4-hour flight via VIE or FRA to OVD Asturias or with a stopover via MAD. We have no overland commute.
ArcelorMittal Asturias — Spain's largest steel complex
ArcelorMittal Asturias is a steel complex with two plants (Gijón and Avilés) — blast furnace, coke plant, hot-rolling mill, cold-rolling mill, galvanising line. Annual production around 7 million tonnes of steel. For an integrator it's an environment of the same category as U. S. Steel Košice — high-temperature zones (up to 800 °C around the rolling mill), ATEX (zone 1 or 2 for the coke plant, zone 20/21/22 for dust environments), distinct chemical handling regime in galvanising (acids, zinc bath).
For us ArcelorMittal Asturias is a segment where we aren't a typical full-scope supplier — that's the world of large metallurgical project firms (SES Tlmače, Koksopt, Tenova). But for administrative and IT infrastructure zones, for parts of plant maintenance, for smaller refit projects in zones 1 or 2 we're realistically deliverable. We hold training for work in ATEX zones and have experience from multiple industrial audits at the Košice complex.
ArcelorMittal globally has its own supplier audit regime (SAS — Supplier Audit System) with strict vendor prequalification process. For us that's an additional investment we make only after the first confirmed contact.
Asturiana de Zinc — the largest zinc smelter in the EU
Asturiana de Zinc in San Juan de Nieva (Castrillón, 25 km from Oviedo) is the largest zinc smelter in the European Union — annual production around 500,000 tonnes of zinc metal. For an integrator the segment is complex via the combination of hydrometallurgical process (acids, electrolysis), high-temperature zones (smelting furnaces up to 1,000 °C) and ATEX dust zones (zone 21/22 for zinc dust layers).
For us Asturiana de Zinc is the same category as ArcelorMittal — for core metallurgical work subcontractor model, for administrative/IT and maintenance refit zones direct deliveries. Hydrometallurgy adds a special layer of acid-resistant materials (PTFE, glass laminate, special stainless steels) and process automation for electrolysers.
Du Pont Asturias — special chemicals
Du Pont Asturias (Tamón, near Avilés) produces special chemicals (Nomex, Kevlar precursors, fluoropolymer membranes). For an integrator the segment is high-risk — ATEX zones for volatile organic solvents, SIL-3 hazard analysis (IEC 61511) for continuous process operations, strict Du Pont contractor management process (DCMP — Du Pont Contractor Management Process).
DCMP is comparable in complexity to Repsol CMS or BASF Verbund contractor framework — vendor prequalification takes a standard 3-6 months, requires documentation of OHSAS 18001 or ISO 45001 certification, plus an internal Du Pont safety culture audit.
El Musel Port — industrial port
El Musel Gijón is one of the largest industrial ports in Spain — container terminal, iron ore import for ArcelorMittal Asturias, zinc ore import for Asturiana de Zinc, export of finished products. For an integrator it's relevant via port logistics — RFID tagging, integration of automated warehouses, heavy-lift logistics.
For us El Musel is a direct potential transfer of `packaging-relocation` (Košice, 2024) type work with extension to port specifics.
Cogen Energía — cogeneration
Cogen Energía operates cogeneration units for ArcelorMittal Asturias — using coke-oven and blast-furnace gas to produce electricity and heat. For an integrator the segment is relevant via SCADA for continuous process operations and integration into the national energy grid (REE peninsular grid).
Regulatory framework — Principado de Asturias
Asturias operates under the national REBT (RD 842/2002), UNE-HD 60364, UNE-EN 60204-1 and ATEX transposition via RD 144/2016. **Gobierno del Principado de Asturias** adds a regional authorisation layer via Consejería de Industria, Empleo y Promoción Económica.
For metallurgical industry internal ArcelorMittal SAS, Asturiana de Zinc QMS or Du Pont DCMP dominate over the national REBT. For building permits CTE plus Asturian implementing decree.
Posted Workers — REC for Asturias
REC registration 5 days in advance remains national. For Asturias a regional copy isn't required. For large metallurgical clients (ArcelorMittal, Asturiana de Zinc) internal compliance audit is added. SMI €1,184/month plus Convenio Colectivo Estatal de Industria, Tecnología y Servicios del Sector del Metal.
Our commuting relationship
For Oviedo we work exclusively by air. From OVD Asturias airport (Castrillón, 47 km from Oviedo) direct connections from MAD and BCN. For Gijón and Avilés transport by car 30-35 km from Oviedo. Accommodation typically in Oviedo centre or Avilés (for ArcelorMittal Avilés and Du Pont Tamón).
Rolling-team regime for repeat cooperation, two-week minimum scope of work.
Which pillars fit best
For ArcelorMittal Asturias and Asturiana de Zinc — **Electro + Industry** with strong ATEX and hardened-equipment focus. For administrative/IT and maintenance refit zones we're directly deliverable, for core metallurgical work subcontractor model. The Košice U. S. Steel experience is directly transferable in the segments where we're active.
For Du Pont Asturias — **Electro + Industry** with ATEX and SIL-3 focus. DCMP vendor prequalification is an additional investment done after the first confirmed contact.
For El Musel Port — **Industry + Software/AI** with focus on RFID, automated warehouses, integration of heavy-lift logistics.
Conclusion
In Oviedo we're in an active acquisition phase. Asturia's metallurgical industry is for us a segment with strict vendor prequalification, but with a direct competence parallel to U. S. Steel Košice. For the first Asturian client we're ready with a rolling-team regime.
