Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is for us in Canarias a dual-city metropolis (with Santa Cruz de Tenerife it forms a two-centred autonomous community) — a strategically specific market sharing with Mallorca the island autonomous energy geography, but with a further layer via the special tax regime ZEC (Zona Especial Canaria). From Prešov it's a 5-hour flight via MAD or FRA to LPA Las Palmas. We have no overland commute — the Canaries are the most distant market we actively track.
Off-grid context — Canary autonomous grid
The Canary Islands operate in the Sistema Eléctrico No Peninsular (SENP) regime — an island autonomous grid without physical connection to the peninsular Spanish grid. That means each island has its own generation capacity, its own frequency regulation, and its own battery storage requirements for stabilisation. For an integrator with expertise in renewable energy SCADA, SiC power semi inverter integration and battery storage, the Canaries are naturally interesting.
Endesa Canarias operates primary generation on all seven islands — a combination of gas turbines, cogeneration, photovoltaic parks and recently also wind parks. REE (Red Eléctrica de España) maintains for Canarias specific procedimientos de operación with higher boundary values for minimum inertia, frequency nadir and maximum RES penetration.
For us there's an open field of work in battery energy storage system (BESS) deployment — wind farm and solar PV plant add variability that must be compensated either by synchronous spinning reserve, or BESS with fast frequency response. This segment in Canarias is growing — Naturgy, Iberdrola Renovables and smaller IPPs (Independent Power Producers) are actively building new projects.
Disa Group, Cemex España Tenerife
Disa Group is the largest Canary operator of petrol stations — own logistics of fuel import from the peninsula, distribution across all seven islands, local retail. For an integrator it's relevant via ATEX zones for fuel stores, integration of fleet tracking systems and process automation of tanker filling.
Cemex España Tenerife operates the cement industry for the Canary construction market — a client type comparable to Cementos Lemona Mallorca, but with larger volume due to higher Canary construction demand.
Astican Las Palmas — ship repair
Astican Las Palmas is an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) operation for cargo and passenger ships. For an integrator the segment is similar to LOK Košice — own regulatory geography (IMO MARPOL, SOLAS for special ship systems), calibration of measurement equipment, integration into the logistics systems of international shipping lines.
For us Astican is interesting via a special category of marine-grade electrical installations (higher IP67/IP68 protection in exterior zones, special corrosion-resistant materials in saline environments) and integration of ship automation systems.
Sapec Las Palmas — chemistry
Sapec Las Palmas produces fertilisers and special chemicals for Canary agriculture and northern Africa. For an integrator it's relevant via ATEX zones for powder environments, process automation and integration into logistics chains via the Las Palmas port.
Regulatory framework — Canarias
Canarias operates under the national REBT (RD 842/2002), UNE-HD 60364 and UNE-EN 60204-1. Gobierno de Canarias adds a regional authorisation layer via Consejería de Transición Ecológica, Lucha contra el Cambio Climático y Planificación Territorial.
For energy the SENP regime applies with its own procedimientos de operación for the Canary island grid. For building permits CTE plus Canary implementing decree (NUC — Normas Urbanísticas Canarias). For inspections OCA accredited by ENAC.
**ZEC (Zona Especial Canaria)** — the Canaries have a special tax regime with reduced corporate tax (4% instead of 25%) for qualified investments. For cross-border suppliers it doesn't directly affect invoicing (VAT reverse-charge via Art. 84 LIVA stays the same as for the peninsula), but some Canary clients may have their own ZEC compliance audit for subcontractors.
Posted Workers — REC for Canarias
REC registration 5 days in advance remains national. For Canarias a regional copy isn't required, but for Endesa Canarias and larger clients an internal compliance audit may be requested. SMI €1,184/month plus Convenio Colectivo Estatal de Industria.
Our commuting relationship
For Las Palmas we work exclusively by air. From Prešov 5 hours' flight via MAD or FRA — the most demanding logistics in Europe that we actively track. For a profitable trip we need a minimum three-week scope of work. Rolling-team regime for repeat cooperation — team rotates every three weeks due to time shift and flight fatigue.
Which pillars fit best
For Endesa Canarias and the SENP renewable energy cluster — **Electro + Automation** with focus on BESS deployment, renewable energy SCADA, SiC power semi inverter integration. Here we're in a pre-engagement phase; local SENP specification we complete according to specific project.
For Disa Group and fuel logistics — **Electro + Industry** with ATEX focus for fuel stores.
For Astican ship repair — **Electro + Industry** with marine-grade focus. Here we're without a delivered reference in this special segment.
Conclusion
Las Palmas is for us the most distant actively tracked market in Europe. Without a delivered Canary project we don't yet have a local name, but BESS deployment for the expanding SENP renewable energy capacity we consider the primary opening segment. For the first Canary client we're ready with a rolling-team regime with a three-week rotational period and a three-week minimum scope of work.
