Barcelona is for us the industrial and R&D twin of Madrid — SEAT VW Group Martorell on the automotive side, Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) on the research side, HP Sant Cugat as the largest HP R&D centre outside the USA. From Prešov it's a 3.5-hour flight via VIE to BCN El Prat. The road trip (over 2,200 km) is out of the question — Barcelona is just as much an air market as Madrid.
SEAT Martorell — Spain's largest car producer
SEAT Volkswagen Group Martorell produces the Ibiza, Arona and the whole Cupra range — production around 500,000 vehicles a year, the largest car plant in Spain. For an integrator with Tier-1 supplier experience, the same VW Konzernstandard applies as at VW Slovakia Bratislava — NDA before the first email, audit through Konzernaudit, integration into global TIA Portal projects, documentation that must pass five auditors.
Our delivered `automotive-injection-line` project (Bratislava, 2024) was exactly this category — Engel, KraussMaffei and Yushin injection line under Siemens TIA Portal with Ignition SCADA supervision. For Martorell the same category of work is realistically transferable: Sondermaschinenbau, robotic integration (KUKA, ABB, FANUC, Yaskawa, Universal Robots), MES integration via Apriso, OPC UA backbone between lines.
In SEAT's EV transformation phase (Cupra Born, planned Cupra Raval), battery handling adds — high-voltage zones, EV-specific intrinsic safety, integration of robots for handling battery modules. Here Barcelona takes the role of the lead plant for the entire VW Group MEB Small platform.
BSC-CNS Barcelona Supercomputing Center
MareNostrum 5 in Torre Girona is a top-10 supercomputer in the EU with 314 PFlops performance — heterogeneous architecture (Intel Sapphire Rapids + NVIDIA H100). For an integrator with expertise in AI cluster build-out, BSC is interesting on the periphery — not as a direct client (they handle deliveries via global OEM partners), but via the ecosystem of smaller university and start-up HPC workplaces emerging around BSC.
Our `ai-cluster-research-lab` project (Cluj-Napoca, 2025) — NVIDIA Blackwell, Mellanox NDR, Slurm + Pyxis orchestration — is exactly the type of work that smaller HPC labs at universities in Catalonia (UPC Barcelona Tech, IIIA-CSIC, ICREA) demand. Here we move in the segment of 4 to 16 GPU clusters with their own orchestration layer.
HP Sant Cugat and IT cluster
HP Sant Cugat is HP's largest R&D centre outside the USA — development of large-format printers (Latex, DesignJet) and 3D printing systems (Multi Jet Fusion). For infrastructure projects (data centre capacity, DCIM rollout, fibre backbone) it's a client with continuous demand of the type we cover in the Data Centres + Software/AI pillar. Equinix BB1-BB2 and EdgeConneX BCN1 complement the Barcelona DC ecosystem.
Regulatory framework — Catalonia
Catalonia adds a regional layer above the national REBT. The Generalitat de Catalunya maintains its own Registre d'Instal·ladors (REIC) database; for cross-border suppliers that means an additional copy of posted-worker registration via Departament d'Empresa i Treball. Comunicación de desplazamiento via REC remains national, but for Catalonia a regional parallel is required as well.
For building permits CTE plus Catalan transposition (Decret 141/2012), for inspections OCA accredited by ENAC, for ATEX zones RD 144/2016. For VW supplier work Konzernstandard prevails over local specifics, but REBT and UNE-HD 60364 remain the minimum core.
Language — castellano + català
For Catalonia we work primarily in castellano (Spanish), but the client often expects documentation also acceptable in català (Catalan). For us that means: technical documentation in ES + EN, for official communication we accept català forms with ES or EN reply. For B2B business contact usted/ustedes formal register.
Our commuting relationship
For Barcelona we work exclusively by air with accommodation for 1 to 6 weeks within reach of the client. For Martorell (35 km from the centre) accommodation typically in Sant Cugat or Sant Andreu de la Barca. For repeat cooperation rolling-team regime.
Which pillars fit best
For SEAT Martorell and the automotive supplier orbit — **Industry + Automation + Electro**. Sondermaschinenbau, robotic integration, MES Apriso, OPC UA backbone, EV-specific intrinsic safety. Our Bratislava reference is directly transferable.
For BSC ecosystem and university HPC labs — **Data Centres + Software/AI**. Smaller GPU clusters of 4 to 16 nodes, Slurm orchestration, NVIDIA Blackwell hardware build, NCCL benchmark verification.
For HP Sant Cugat and Equinix DC hub — **Data Centres + Software/AI**. DCIM rollout, cooling for rack densities above 25 kW.
Conclusion
In Barcelona we're in an active acquisition phase, without a delivered Catalan project. For VW Group supplier work we have direct Konzernstandard experience from the Bratislava reference. For the HPC and data centre segment we have directly transferable competencies from Romanian projects. For the first Barcelona client we're ready with a rolling-team regime.
